Is it the bride’s responsibility to pay for her out-of-town bridesmaids’ lodging?

“This can be a sticky situation. Costs can add up quickly when you are a bridesmaid, especially for out-of-towners who pay extra for travel fees. Then, considering many bridesmaids also pay for their dress, should they have to pay for accommodations too? For the bride and her family, there is no obligation to pay for lodging for bridesmaids who live far from the wedding location. Bridesmaids can take advantage of the discounted hotel rate the bride has secured for her guests. That being said, if the budget allows, it’s always a nice gesture to cover the cost of their accommodations.”

Backyard Bliss

With sunshine finally warming things up, we wanted to share this beautiful backyard wedding! Laura and Stephen, the bride and groom tied the knot in the intimate, quaint setting of their backyard. Surrounded by lush landscape and orange, pale blue, green and chocolate brown flowers by Sahana Creative Floral Design, this sunset affair was the perfect way to celebrate with close friends and family. With help from Trudy Baade and Sarah Pittman of Lagniappe Weddings, the soft light from white paper lanterns set the al fresco reception aglow. Guests dined on fresh menu items featuring herbs and vegetables from the couple’s garden. Laura looked radiant in her gown and accessories from The Bridal Salon at Stanley Korshak. The bridesmaids wore dresses from Bella Bridesmaid in Dallas. The pair also included their beloved canine in the outdoor festivities! We just love how an outdoor soiree provides a happy, relaxed atmosphere to such a perfect day! Lagniappe is a word used often in Louisiana and was a house hold term for identical twins Trudy and Sarah growing up. The word means "a little something extra" and is the company slogan for Lagniappe Weddings, established in 2004 by Trudy and Sarah Tooke.

This family business focuses on elevating the wedding planning experience with hands on personal attention for not only the bride but everyone involved with the event. "Executing a wedding is stressful for brides, it's our goal to reduce that stress and bring value with our services," explains Trudy.

When asked about the pitfalls of a destination wedding- Trudy advised the couple not assume it will be a less expensive route for a ceremony and reception. While a destination wedding might decrease the cost to you personally as you may spend less on food and beverage due to a more intimate wedding- you are increasing the amount of money for your attendants and guests- so expect some grumbling. However, many guests, given advanced notice, will earmark your wedding for a vacation.

Trudy suggests the couple and families define a budget and then explore options for venues that will work food and beverage, accommodations, flights and the ceremony itself into the allocated amount. Going on location does not eliminate the need for a dress, attire for attendants, invitations, wedding party gifts and consulting.

Hiring a coordinator is critical for a destination wedding. Not only have you not planned a wedding before, but you don't know the intricacies of executing an event in a foreign country or on an island. An experienced wedding professional, such as Lagniappe will help you navigate and keep you from falling prey to unscrupulous vendors and amateurs new to the wedding industry.

Trudy suggests you hire certain vendors from home. A planner who can work closely with you and make the necessary discovery trips to the venue is invaluable. Often resorts and venues offer photography packages for your wedding, but Carmine LiDestri of Visual Image Photography and Videography cautions brides and grooms from relying solely on such services. "I've had brides come to me after the fact with ruined film, digital images too small to view due to an improperly set camera or even to have photos taken because their wedding photo package only included one hour." Make sure you know what you are paying for and what you are getting, advises Carmine and be certain to "look at the work of the photographer being hired by the venue to do your wedding."

The ideal scenario is to take your photographer and videographer with you, Carmine suggests, to ensure seamless and copious coverage of the entire wedding event- not just the ceremony. Further, with the professionals in your home town- acquisition of the imagery is quicker, the placing of portrait and wedding album orders is more efficient and you can visit with the photographer face to face if you need guidance.

Located on 27th floor of the Hilton Anatole , Nana Restaurant and Bar overlooks the Dallas skyline and creates a fabulous setting for any occasion. Along with the dining room, Nana offers private rooms for receptions, private dinners or holiday parties. And don't miss out on The Nana Bar which offers a great lounge setting with the same wonderful view for before and after dinner cocktails.

I had the wonderful pleasure of dining in the Presidents' Boardroom on Monday evening. While my purpose for the visit was for business, I must say it was hard to focus on the matters at hand. The room was set beautifully and the food was just AMAZING. The baked potato soup shooters for hors d'oeuvres...Incredible! Our four course dinner was paired with the perfect wines. From the Poached Shrimp Cocktail, to the Spinach Salad dressed with manchego cheese and candied pine nuts to the Filet Mignon (paired with baby artichokes.....my favorite) and finally, the Peanut Butter Ice Cream with a warm chocolate fondant, I was one happily stuffed gal!

But Nana is just one piece to the magnificent puzzle that the Hilton Anatole has to offer. For any size wedding reception, anniversary party, charity event or corporate function, the Hilton Anatole has it all. We had the wonderful pleasure of working with Mattie and Carl for their October 10th wedding in Dallas. They chose the newly and beautifully renovated Stoneleigh Hotel as their backdrop for their ceremony and reception. We worked with fabulous vendors to help create their dream wedding. We designed their ceremony to be "in the round", which turned out to be a truly romantic setting for the bride and groom and their guests. The Penthouse of the Stoneleigh was a perfect location for their reception. Guests were treated to fabulous food, a candy bar, a chocolate fountain, a lounge area, a cigar bar and a fantastic band, Time Machine, to entertain them all night. We had the pleasure of working with Laura and Steve on their small intimate backyard wedding. This was not your typical backyard wedding. With so much attention to detail, they truly captured the essence of romantic outdoor celebration. Both Laura and Steve are architects, so planning is their nature. We were so thankful of their amazing diagrams for the ceremony and reception they prepared for us and the catering staff. They are also big green thumbs and transformed their backyard into a fantastic garden setting.

Last night, NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) hosted an event to sponsor the Dallas Chapter of the Susan G Komen Foundation. Individuals and/or Wedding Associations participated in the event by creating a table scape of a survivor of Breast Cancer. We were asked to represent AACWP (American Association of Certified Wedding Planners) and chose our godmother, Nancy, as our inspiration for the table scape.

AACWP's table won the People's Choice Award at the event! We were so excited and thrilled to have honored a very special lady in our lives!

Below is a description of the design that was displayed by the table:

“In fairy tales, a fairy godmother is a fairy with magical powers who acts as a mentor or parent to someone, in the role that an actual godparent was expected to play in many societies.” To create the fantasy setting where our Fairy Godmother could celebrate with her team of doctors, who helped ward off the ugly stepmother (breast cancer), we wanted to showcase the style of the hostess with her favorite colors and holiday theme – Halloween. The fairytale table is a charming display showing appreciation to her guardian angels or quite possibly her fairy god-doctors…Bippity-boppity-boo!

Matthew proposed to Michelle at the famous French Room restaurant at the historic Adolphus Hotel in September 2008 which made for an easy decision on where to have their wedding reception. Michelle choose a soft pink color palate to compliment their traditional and romantic styles.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend but in Michelle's case, SHOES were like her diamonds! Valentino had the perfect pair for her wedding and, YES, she wore these ALL NIGHT LONG!

May was a fantastic month for Lagniappe Weddings with three back to back weddings. Jason and Alisa's wedding was the last of the three and it was truly amazing. We have worked with so many brides and grooms but I have never worked with a couple so determined to get everything they wanted on their wish list!

A great gift: matching bridesmaid velour suits in the wedding colors (chocolate and pink)

The ceremony was held at 6:00pm at First United Methodist Church in Dallas. Guests were witness to a beautiful ceremony something Alisa and Jason planned every detail. Once the ceremony ended, cocktail hour began at the Anatole. I remember planning this party with and thinking: 'you want all this to take place in one hour?" YES IT DID! Jason and Alisa wanted to bring a new twist to the traditional cocktail hour so they hired a variety of entertainers. Guests were greeted with beautifully decorated/masked dancers as they entered. Throughout the hour, guests mingled with a juggler, talked to live buffet tables and then were entertained with break dancers and Capoeria Dancers (something from Jason's Brazilian background). AGAIN, all this in one hour!!

Why Stop there....to transition guests into the ballroom for dinner, Jason and Alisa saved the best for last. Guests heard the start of Jock Jams remix and then a confetti cannon explode. Out from behind the curtain, Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders emerged (of course, we had entertainers). Guests knew no difference and they were a hit, which delayed them from getting to the ballroom for dinner.

The next treat for guests was a beautifully decorated ballroom fit for royalty! Alisa loves PINK and Jason wanted hits of chocolate. I think our designers made it happen so thank you to Fete des Fleur, Absolute Lighting & BBJ Linen. Guests dined on a custom menu and later enjoyed both wedding cake and grooms cake made by the brides mother. Yes, they got to eat their ice cream too...thanks toMarble Slab.

To get the party started, the DJ, Dave from London, opened the dancefloor with one of the couple's favorite songs..Footloose! From 10pm to 1am, friends and family packed the dancefloor. In the five years I have been planning weddings, I have never seen a group with so much energy. Alisa and Jason told me all year to expect it, but doesn't everyone think their group is the highest energy. Obviously I was wrong b/c they were there to party. It was amazing and Dave was a fantastic Video DJ.

At a recent wedding, an older guest took it upon himself to cut a piece of the brides cake before the new couple officially cut the cake. Talk about an overzealous guest! He even attempted to come back for seconds, which my assistants had to fend off with the cake knives. Luckily the cake had fresh flowers so a little improvising to cover the missing piece was easy. I thought everyone knew the rules...do not touch the cake until the pretty lady in white has cut her piece. I will definitely be on the lookout for cake snitchers and possibly always advise for fresh flowers on the cake or hide the knives until the last minute!

We had the pleasure of working with Ellie and Brian on their January 10th wedding in Fort Worth. The couple chose Colonial Country Club as their reception site since Brian is an avid golfer and the Club is well known for their annual golf tournament.

On the day of the wedding, Ellie and Brian decided to see each other before the ceremony to avoid fighting with daylight savings. It was a very cold January day but they braved the chilly wind and were able to capture many amazing photos. Photographers with Perry Aslyn did an incredible job showcasing the true beauty of this couple and their surroundings.

At the reception, guests were treated to a wonderful display of food, delicious wedding cake and a Sweet Treat from the candy bar. We enjoyed working with their band, Trey and the Tritones. They were truly entertaining playing a wide variety of songs and keeping the dancefloor full.

In August 2008 we, along with many wonderful vendors and friends, planned the Dallas Market Party for The Knot. The annual networking event invites local wedding professionals to network, catch up and, of course, see new trends in the wedding industry. Our main focus was to provide tips on how to plan an eco-friendly event with a trendy twist or as we called it 'Eco-Chic' event!

Here are a few helpful tips on reducing your carbon footprint when creating an enviromentally friendly wedding and/or event:

Use recycled paper for your invitations

Set up a wedding website to keep guests updated on wedding events

Use local vendors to cut down on travel and fuel usage

Are wedding favors really necessary? Our answer: No, but favors are "Lagniappe"and can be a fun detail added to your wedding theme.

Favors have been a part of weddings for many centuries and, to many, are an important detail to their weddings. These gifts are a great way to show appreciation to your guests for celebrating with you. It is believed (by wikipedia) that the first wedding favors were a bonbonniere; a small trinket box made of crystals or jewels filled with sugar confections. Today favors have evolved beyond the box and here are a few of our favorites and some tips to consider.

Favorites: (based on experience)

Candy bar in your wedding colors or multi-color

Donation to your favorite charity in your guests honor

Favorite his/her cookies

Edible items that are symbolic to your history or relationship (i.e. pralines from New Orleans if it is your hometown or was your first date)

Small (and I stress small) bottle of your favorite wine. Check with your reception venue regarding their policy on outside alcohol

CD of your favorite music that can be easily uploaded to an IPOD

Personalize (with either monogram or wedding date) small to go boxes and box up extra cake. Many times there is too much cake at weddings and unfortunately a lot of it is thrown away. Great way to reuse and think green!

Below are favors you may want to reconsider before purchasing: (again, based on experience)

Pocket sized silver picture frames with photos of you. Use a photo in your save the date or enlarge an engagement photo to display at your reception.

Trinkets (cultural or symbolic). Consider incorporating your culture traditions in your menu or with entertainment at your reception. If you are set on this type of favor, make sure it is small enough to travel with and your guests could reuse it.

Avoid personalizing your favors that are not edible or disposable. Save personlization for stationery, lighting, napkins, and other details for your keepsake.

Our advice to you . . .
keep your wedding favors simple and sweet.

A Weekend Getaway!

For all of you in need of a quiet, relaxing getaway, travel to The Cliffs Resort on Possum Kingdom Lake. It's about 2 hours from DFW and well worth the drive.

My husband, Matt, and I decided to celebrate Valentines Day and our upcoming Anniversary there. It was peaceful, relaxing and refreshing. The weather was a bit chilly so golf was out of the question so we decided to visit the spa and take a scenic drive around the community. We intend to go back this summer in hopes of warmer weather and indulge in the summer activities on property, on the lake and, of course, the spa!

The Cliffs is a great place for bachelor/bachelorette weekend getaways. They offer golf packages and spa packages.
